Pareidolia, The Tall Swaying Marshmallow Girl

paintings 2026

Lately, I have been placing two discs of the same color among the abstract shapes of my paintings. The two shapes become a gaze that is easily recognized.

It is the gaze of the snake charmer, beyond the jungle and the confectioner's molasses.

"It’s the phenomenon of pareidolia," my studio neighbor, Guillaume Pétrou, whispers to me. We eventually discern a human presence when looking intensely. We end up seeing things where there is nothing.

The "Grande Guimauve" (Great Marshmallow) is swaying now. She stares at me with her eyes of fire. She whispers sweet words to me. She releases enchanting scents—peppermint, raspberry, liquorice. I am too focused to be fooled.
